JAMES A. RYAN JR.

CDR (Ret.) James Anthony Ryan Jr. of Virginia Beach, died June 6, 1995, in a local hospital after a brief illness.

He was born in Troy, N.Y., the son of the late James Anthony Ryan and Theresa C. Halpin Ryan. He was educated at Sacred Heart Academy, LaSalle Military Institute, and he received his degree and Military Commission from New York State Maritime University at Fort Schuyler.

During CDR Ryan's 24 years of military service, his tours of duty have included the USS Antietam, USS Keppler, USS Casa Grande, USS Severn and the USS Ozark. He also served as Commanding Officer of USS Pandemus, as an instructor at OCS in Newport, R.I., and as a member of the 3M Team Commander of Task Force. He also served in Vietman.

Upon his retirement, CDR Ryan became president and owner of a shipping agency in which he was a licensed International custom house broker and Freight Forwarder.

He was a communicant of the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base Catholic Chapel for 25 years as well as a former member of the St. Pius School Board and other various organizations.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mary Elizabeth Casey Ryan, formerly of Rhode Island; two sons, James A. Ryan III and his wife Regina of Baltimore, Md., and Charlie P. Ryan and his wife Julie of Berryville, Va.; two daughters, Marybeth Ryan and Christine Ryan, both of Virginia Beach.

A Joyful Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Friday, June 9, 1995, at 1 p.m. in the Little Creek Amphibious Base Catholic Chapel. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk, Va. Friends may join the family tonight at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, from 6 to 9 p.m. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
