Almost a year after creating a special taxing district in the Harborview development in northern Suffolk, the city is considering expanding the area.
Enlarging the district would allow the city to build roads and water and sewer lines in the area while promoting the region as a home for new businesses. Creating new capital projects in the taxing district would not only promote future growth but also would benefit some of the city's poorer neighborhoods, city officials say.
The city plans to hold a public hearing on the expansion in the near future. If the expansion is approved, the special taxing district's assessed value is expected to rise from $64.1 million to $139.6 million. Included in the city's plans are a $1.2 million fire station and municipal center in the region, which is experiencing a boom in residential development. by CNB
