Pier fishing along the northern beaches was excellent Friday.
Spanish mackerel and bluefish were plentiful during most of the day at Kitty Hawk Pier. Avalon Pier fishermen reported good catches of tailor blues and Spanish mackerel. Jiggers were the most effective bait on both piers.
Anglers on Nags Head Pier landed a few Spanish mackerel, blues and several large jacks, and Gene Moore of Richmond decked a 36 1/2 pound king mackerel.
Some Spanish mackerel, gray trout and blues were landed on Jennette's Pier. Sam Thornton of Nags Head caught a cobia weighing 59 pounds, and Mike Wells of Chester, Va., took a 28 1/2 pounder.
Outer Banks Pier fishermen caught spot, blues, small trout and cobia weighing 36 1/2 and 33 pounds.
Fishermen on Rodanthe Pier caught king mackerel of 22 and 20 pounds, cobia of 41 1/2 amd 38 pounds, and several big jacks.
Fishing was slow on Avon Pier, with only a few bottom fish taken. Frisco Pier anglers caught a few Spanish mackerel, bluefish and spot.
Small bottom fish and a few scattered blues were landed in the surf from Corolla to Oregon Inlet. Some trout were taken in Green Island Slough.
Along the beach south of Rodanthe, some small spot, croaker, mullet and blues were taken. At Cape Point, lots of skakes were beached along with a few puppy drum and blues.
Some bottom fish and a few flounder were landed south of Cape Point.
Inshore trolling was good around Oregon Inlet, with Spanish mackerel and bluefish plentiful. Headboats reported good catches of croaker in the sound, and sea bass and triggerfish in the ocean.
Some nice flounder were caught in Davis Slough by drift fishermen.
Dolphin fishing was good off Oregon Inlet. Yellowfin tuna action was fair. Blue marlin were released by the Tar Heel and the Right Hook, and a white marlin by the C.J.IV. A blue marlin weighing 546 pounds was brought to the dock by the Phideau fishing out of Pirates Cove Marina. The fish was brought to the surface dead after the battle.
Off Hatteras, dolphin fishing was good and tuna fishing fairly slow. A blue marlin was released by the Hatteras Blue, two white marlin by the Top Billing, and sailfish by the Chaser and Release. Cobia fishing was good in Hatteras Inlet.
Pier fishing for Spanish mackerel along the northern beaches should remain good as long as the winds remain good and onshore.
Water temperature at the Corps of Engineers pier at Duck was 71.5 degrees Friday. by CNB
