VIRGINIA POWER NAMES CAVINESS TO NEW VENTURE

Virginia Power on Friday named executives of a newly formed business unit that will market electricity services outside its traditional service area, and it tapped the utility's top executive in Hampton Roads for one of the new posts. Thomas L. ``Tim'' Caviness Jr., 49, vice president of Virginia Power's Norfolk-based Eastern Division for the past six years, will start his new job as vice president-retail energy services July 1. He will be based in Richmond.

Caviness has been one of Hampton Roads' most active business leaders in economic development. He chairs Forward Hampton Roads, the economic-development arm of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce. In Richmond, he will help Virginia Power carve out markets for a wide range of energy services for industrial, commercial and government customers. A large part of the focus of the new Energy Services Business Unit, which will be headed by longtime Virginia Power executive Larry W. Ellis, will be developing markets for the utility in other states.

In Norfolk, Caviness will be replaced by Thomas A. Hyman Jr., currently vice president of the utility's North Carolina service area. Hyman will continue to have responsibility for North Carolina as well as eastern Virginia and will keep offices in both Norfolk and Roanoke Rapids, N.C. Hyman, 43, is a Norfolk native who has worked for Virginia Power since 1973. (Staff) by CNB
