To combat myths that the number 13 is unlucky, organizers of the 13th annual Wanchese Seafood Festival have created an impressive program of food, educational activities and live entertainment.
The festival will be held on Saturday, from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wanchese Seafood Industrial Park.
Event coordinator Rich Novak called the festival ``a day of fun.''
``It's a special tradition on the Outer Banks,'' Novak said. ``It's a celebration of the region and what we have to offer.''
It will also be a day of good food. The Wanchese Lions Club will prepare platters of shrimp, fish, clamstrips, hushpuppies, cole slaw, potato salad, steamed crabs and iced tea. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under.
Novak said each year the festival features unusual seafood such as squid to let people sample something different.
``We like to feature under-utilized seafood products - things most people don't often get to try - so people will be aware that they are out there,'' Novak said.
The festival will kick off with a blessing of the fleet from local ministers. The Coast Guard will also present colors. About 50 to 100 local merchants will sell arts and crafts as a variety of live bands perform.
At noon, the 440th Army Band will hold a concert. Jamie Jamison, a country musician, will follow at 1 p.m. Captain's Crew will perform gospel music at 1:45 p.m. Country singer Robin Cudworth will take the stage at 2:30, followed by contemporary musician Rob Fick at 3:40 p.m.
The Crystal Dawn will offer free cruises hourly from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
During the day, there will be educational programs and commercial fishing exhibits. by CNB
