SYLVESTER SMITH

Sylvester ``Smitty'' Smith, 74, of the 900 block of Florida Ave., a retired aviation mechanic, died June 14, 1995, in the residence of his daughter and son-in-law in San Diego, Calif.

Mr. Smith was born in Norfolk County. He retired from Norfolk Naval Air Station after 32 years, was a member and usher of Third Baptist Church, a member of Doric Lodge (NU)98, Order of Masons, and received the Faithful and Meritorious Service Award from the United States government in 1969. He was the widower of Ruth M. Smith.

Survivors include a daughter, Ruth M. Smith Franklin of San Diego, Calif.; three sisters, Ethel Williams, Rosa Parker and Maude Beckwith, and a brother, Charlie Smith, all of Portsmouth; seven grandchildren, Leonist Franklin Jr., Javonda R. Franklin, Anita Borden, Stepfaine Johnson, Lenice Smith, Verion Wilson and Leon W. Smith, Jr.; nieces; nephews; cousins; in-laws; and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Third Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Joe B. Fleming. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park with Masonic honors. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home will begin at noon Monday. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
