MEDICAL STUDENT VANISHES FROM NIGHTCLUB FRIENDS AND FAMILY BELIEVE HER DISAPPEARANCE IS OUT OF CHARACTER.

Police are asking for the public's help in locating a 21-year-old Georgia medical student who vanished from an Oceanfront-area nightclub Sunday night.

Jennifer Lea Evans, a Dean's List student at Emory University in Atlanta, was last seen late Sunday at The Bayou, a popular club in the first floor of the Radisson Hotel on 19th Street.

At the club, Evans met a man who claimed to be a Navy SEAL, her friends said. He persuaded her to stay while her friends left for coffee. When the friends returned, Evans and the man were gone.

She hasn't been seen since.

Police spokesman Mike Carey said there is no evidence that Evans was abducted or is being held against her will, but he said investigators believe her disappearance is suspicious.

``To disappear like this is totally out of character for this young lady, according to what her family and friends have indicated,'' Carey said.

Evans' friends and an investigator working for Evans' parents gave this account:

Evans flew from Atlanta to Norfolk on Saturday to stay with her former college roommate, Andria Burdette. Burdette's parents rented a Sandbridge cottage for the week.

Another friend, Michelle McCammon, was also staying at the cottage.

Sunday night, the three women drove to the Oceanfront and ended up at The Bayou around 10:45 p.m. There, Evans met a man with short, wavy hair. She spent most of the evening with him.

About 1:15 a.m., Burdette and McCammon wanted to leave, but the stranger wanted Evans to stay longer. Burdette and McCammon said they would leave for coffee and a snack and return an hour later. When they did, Evans and her new companion were gone.

The friends waited until at least 4 a.m. before driving back to Sandbridge.

The missing woman is 5 feet 3 inches tall and 135 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes. She was last seen wearing brown denim shorts and a vest. The brand-name ``Bongo'' was sewn onto the back of her clothes.

The man she was last seen with claimed to be 20, although patrons must be 21 to get into the club. He was described as 6 feet tall and 170 pounds with sun-bleached light brown hair, thick on top but cut short on the sides and back. His nose was wide and his lips were full. He was last seen wearing an olive drab T-shirt and jeans.
