Ianthia Virginia Uzzle, of the 1000 block of Keel St., ``Ianthia Mother Uzzle,'' as she was fondly known, a music teacher and a lover of music, went to eternal rest on Monday evening, June 19, 1995, in a local hospital.
A native of Norfolk, she was the daughter of the late Lottie B. Williams and Charles Elliott and was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Norfolk. Ianthia served on the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church Deaconess Board and was a member of the Pastor's Aid. She was the founder and organist of the Male Choir, Gospel Choir and Youth Choir.
She was past grand worthy matron, Grand Chapter Order of Eastern Stars of Virginia and past grand musician. Over 50 years OES past matron, St. Thomas (NU)5 founder Grand Session Choir; past grand senior matron United Order of Tents, member of Adaline Jewels Tent; past president/parliamentarian Daughters of Norfolk; past president Choir Directors and Organists Guild of Hampton University; past secretary Board of Directors, Hampton Guild Scholarship Committee; financial secretary of Tidewater Area, Musicians Chapter of National Association of Negro Musicians, secretary of Tidewater Music Teachers Forum ``charter member,'' member of Virginia State Music Teachers Association; certified member of National Association of Music Teachers, adjudicator-National Guild of Piano Teachers, member of National Guild of Piano Teachers Hall of Fame; Pi Mu Alfra Music Sorority; Red Cross volunteer; tutoring volunteer with Sevamp for Senior Citizens, and directress Uzzle School of Music for over 60 years.
Ianthia graduated from Howard University and pursued her graduate studies at Hampton Institute and the Sherwood Conservatory of Music in Chicago.
She leaves in loving memory her husband, William H. Uzzle; one brother, Dr. Charles E. Elliott of Silver Spring, Md.; one foster brother, Isaiah Brown; four children, Ianthia V. Johnson of Houston, Margaret A. Fields of Bayshore, N.Y., Lottie F. Bailey of Washington, D.C., and Charles E. Fields of Norfolk; one stepdaughter, Elizabeth Lassiter of Virginia Beach; two stepsons, Richard A. Fields of Bayshore, N.Y., Edward Uzzle of Oakland, Calif.; two grandchildren, Vincent L. and Duryea Johnson of Dallas; six sisters-in-law, Mable E. Elliott of Silver Spring, Md., Cassandra U. Freeman, Mary E. Uzzle of Virginia Beach, Nettie Uzzle of Brymau, Pa., Ella Uzzle of Brymau, Pa., and Elizabeth Uzzle of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sons-in-law, Roy Bailey of Washington, D.C., and Vincent L. Johnson of Dayton, Ohio; two nephews, Jeffery Elliott of Boulder, Colo., Lancer Bryant Elliott of Ocean City, Md.; one niece, Linda B. Phelps of Los Angeles; two brothers-in-law, Oscar Uzzle of Pennsylvania and Haywood Uzzle of Virginia Beach; and a host of additional relatives and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 525 Dinwiddie St., Norfolk, by Dr. I. Joseph Williams. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Viewing will be only on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Norfolk, is in charge. Friends will assemble with the family at the church at 12:15 p.m. Saturday.
