IVERSON'S PRO-AM DEBUT IS TODAY IF BRIDGE-TUNNEL TRAFFIC IS WILLING, THE GEORGETOWN STAR WILL PLAY AT 11 A.M.

We've finally found something that can stop Allen Iverson in his tracks: one of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel's legendary traffic jams.

Iverson, the Big East freshman of the year from Georgetown, was headed to play in the Hampton Roads Pro-Am league at Lake Taylor last Saturday when he was caught in an hour-long backup on I-64 East in Hampton, Pro-Am commissioner Wayne Hoffler said. Rather than sit in the tie-up, Iverson turned around and headed home.

Tunnel traffic willing, Iverson is expected to make his Pro-Am debut today at 11 a.m., when his A&G Imports team takes on Central Fidelity at Lake Taylor. That game will be followed by a contest between Contel Cellular and the Hampton Roads Admirals at 1 p.m.

Hoffler said Georgetown coach John Thompson has asked him to take measures to shield Iverson from the crowds that are expected to turn out to watch him play locally for the first time since his junior year at Bethel High in 1993.

``We'll probably assign a person to stay with him,'' Hoffler said.

Iverson missed his senior year at Bethel after being convicted of three felony counts for his involvement in a bowling alley brawl in 1993. The convictions were overturned on Tuesday.

The Pro-Am's women's division also gets underway Saturday. MI Express plays Sports Authority at 3 p.m.; followed by A&G Imports vs. Planet Music at 5, and Diva Productions vs. Contel Cellular at 7.

Men's play continues Sunday as Kershner & Hawkins plays Nardi Construction at 3 p.m., followed by Planet Music and The Sports Authority at 5.
