There are no small parts, only small actors, and so too with political races. Even the most local of races can take on the excitement and prominence of a national contest, given the right candidates and proper coverage.
As Virginians, we are fortunate to have an election of some sort every single year. This year, in addition to the unfolding drama of seeing whether the rising GOP tide will finally wash its waters upon the steps of the Virginia General Assembly, the most interesting and most contested races in South Hampton Roads are certain to be those for clerk of court.
Your paper has run a multitude of stories about Councilman Randy Wright's posturing in the Norfolk race, and recently ran several stories on the Portsmouth primary battle between Walter Edmonds and Cynthia Morrison. In case you have yet to notice, there is going to be a barn-burner in Chesapeake involving the challenge of Republican candidate Vista Cotten to the long-standing incumbent, Lillie Heart. It is the only race of which I am aware this year pitting woman against woman.
Hold onto your hats, because it's going to be a bumpy ride. I hope you will tune in to what is certain to be one of the most contested and interesting races of this election season.
