The entry deadline to compete in the eighth annual Cock Island Race is July 7.
The race, set for July 14-15 off the Portsmouth waterfront, is open to all sailing vessels 22 feet or larger.
Sanctioned by the Cruising Club of Virginia, the race is staged by Ports Events and a volunteer committee headed by John Ellis and Jim Hawks.
The race, considered one of the biggest sailing celebrations on the East Coast, last year attracted more than 300 boats. It is an unusual race in that it is held on a working river, where large ships, tugboats and transient traffic are moving obstacles.
The start and finish of the race will be visible from the Downtown Portsmouth Seawall
A variety of activities are planned in conjunction with the race. This year's festivities will begin at Portside at 4 p.m. July 14 with music by Lewis McGehee. At 7 p.m., Bill Deal and Fat Ammon will play for a street dance.
The race will begin at 9:30 a.m. July 15. Later that day, Dramtreeo will perform at Portside at 4 p.m. and the Rhythm Kings will play for street dancing beginning at 7 p.m.
Registration forms are available from Ports Events and must be returned with a $50 entry fee by the deadline. The Ports Events office is located in Suite 101, 355 Crawford St. For more information, call 393-9933. by CNB
