CHILDREN'S MUSEUM FULL OF ACTIVITIES

Art, science and history come together in a full schedule of special programs offered at the Children's Museum this summer.

The museum's summer hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily through Labor Day. Admission is $3, which includes the planetarium's astronomy shows, but not the laser light shows.

Admission to the children's laser shows - 1 and 4 p.m. daily - is $2. However, entrance to the museum is not required to see the show.

Outside the museum each Tuesday, Activities in the Mall will allow children to make unusual crafts. The activities are geared to age 7 and older.

Wednesdays story hours will be offered at the museum for children, age 2 and older.

There also will be special workshops and demonstrations throughout the summer weeks.

The following is a calendar of events and activities:

June 27 - Quilt Blocks, mall activity, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fee, 50 cents.

June 28 - Story Hour, 10 a.m. Fee, 50 cents.

July 4 - Rocket Ships, mall activity, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fee, 50 cents.

July 5 - Story Hour, 10 a.m. Fee, 50 cents.

July 6 - Colonial Pastimes, workshop for ages 8 to 12, 10 a.m. to noon. Cost, $5. Space limited; advance registration necessary.

July 6 - Special Properties of Minerals, 30-minute demonstration, 11 a.m. Free.

July 8 - ``Alien Friendly?'' display and demonstration by Ron and Carol Gustafson, creators of new board game, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Followed by mini-competition to get ``out of the black hole.''

July 11 - Collages, mall activity, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fee, 50 cents.

July 12 - Story Hour, 10 a.m. Fee, 50 cents.

July 13 - String Art, workshop for children, ages 8 to 12, 10 a.m. to noon. Cost, $5. Space limited; advance registration necessary.

July 13 - Knot-tying, instruction followed by timed races, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.

July 18 - Worry Dolls, mall activity, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fee, 50 cents.

July 19 - Guest storytellers from the entertainment company, Party Animals, 10 a.m. Fee, 50 cents.

July 20 - Kaleidoscopes, workshop for children, ages 8 to 12, 10 a.m. to noon. Space limited; advance registration necessary.

July 25 - Playdough Sculptures, mall activity, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fee, 50 cents.

July 26 - Story Hour, 10 a.m. Fee, 50 cents.

July 27 - Caricatures by Chris. Staff member Chris Holmes will be located near museum entrance to do caricatures of children or other drawings while they wait, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.

Aug. 1 - Handprints, mall activity, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fee, 50 cents.

Aug. 2 - Story Hour, 10 a.m. Fee, 50 cents.

Aug. 3 - Face-painting by Vina, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m., at entrance to museum.

Aug. 8 - Sand-pouring, mall activity, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fee. 50 cents.

Aug. 9 - Story Hour, 10 a.m. Fee, 50 cents.

Aug. 10 - Knot-tying, instruction followed by timed races, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.

Aug. 12 - Virginia Zoo presents ``Varmits Garmits,'' a discussion and display of animals' body coverings, 9 to 10:30 a.m.

Aug. 15 - Friendship Bracelets, mall activity, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fee, 50 cents.

Aug. 16 - Story Hour, 10 a.m. Fee, 50 cents.

Aug. 24 - Face-painting by Vina, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m., at entrance to museum.

Aug. 26 - Girl Scouts of America on hand to answer questions and sign up members, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Aug. 29 - Cardboard Box Tunnels, mall activity, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fee, 50 cents.

Aug. 30 - Guest storytellers from Party Animals, 10 a.m. Fee, 50 cents.
