Joel Woodrow Johnson, 79, of the 1400 block of Deep Creek Blvd., died Saturday, June 24, 1995, in a Portsmouth hospital.
Mr. Johnson was born in Mathews, Ala. He had retired as a Chief with the U.S. Navy after 24 years and retired from Yorktown Naval Weapons Station as an ordinanceman. He was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church and Fleet Reserve Branch 37. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and Korea.
Survivors include his wife, Lillie C. Johnson; a daughter, Patricia Stumbaugh of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three sons, Charles E. Twisdale and daughter-in-law, Maxine of Moyock, N.C., Robert E. Twisdale of Chesapeake and Carl B. Twisdale and daughter-in-law, Thea A. Twisdale of Portsmouth; four sisters, Emily Gibson of Oxford, Ala., Katie Jones of Prattville, Ala., Gertrude McClurkin of Mount Meigs, Ala. and Margaret Rawlinson of Millbrook, Ala.; two brothers, Solomon Johnson of Montgomery, Ala. and Dewey Johnson of Conyers, Ga.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Evergreen Memorial Park by the Rev. Joseph G. Savinsky. The family will receive friends in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Boulevard Chapel, today from 7 to 8 p.m.
