SMITH'S 42, SANDERLIN'S 45 PRO-AM HIGHLIGHTS

After a few weeks of appearances in front of NBA teams, Joe Smith played at home in Norfolk Sunday.

The Maury High School graduate scored 42 points and grabbed 18 rebounds competing in his second game in as many weeks in the Hampton Roads Pro-Am league. His team, Planet Music, fell to Sports Authority, 160-154, in the second game of the day.

Expected to go in the top few picks in this Wednesday's NBA draft, Smith, who left Maryland following his sophomore year, also blocked five shots and converted six alley-oops in defeat.

``He looked comfortable on both ends of the court,'' John Riddick, the head statistician and scout for the Pro-Am, said.

Smith's performance came on the heels of Allen Iverson's record breaking 71 points Saturday.

In victory for Sports Authority, Darrin Sanderlin exploded for 45 points and 18 assists. The former Norfolk State player followed-up on his 47-point effort a week ago in which he hit a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Marvin Rodgers, heading from Churchland High to West Virginia, chipped in 21 points and 12 boards for SA.

Surprisingly for Planet Music, Smith was not the leading scorer on his team, as Joe Bunn, transferring to Old Dominion, went for 44.

The 6-foot-6 Bunn, described as an ``inside force'' by Riddick, also hauled in 18 boards. Brett Harper, currently at Hagerstown JC, and Larry Johnson, formerly of Bayside High School, each added 20 points for PM.

In the first game, Kershner & Hawkins defeated Nardi Construction, 130-114, led by a 44-point, 12-rebound performance from Sharon Mills, formerly of Virginia Commonwealth. Former ODU player Darrin McDonald scored 23 points and dished out 6 assists in victory.

In defeat, Eric Vaughn, currently at Christopher Newport University, had 23 points and 12 rebounds. Lamont Strothers, who is currently playing pro ball in Israel, had a 23-point, 12-rebound, 6-assist efffort for Nardi. by CNB
