Elderly people throughout Virginia have begun receiving box fans provided by Area Agencies on Aging and Wal-Mart stores through the Virginia Department for the Aging's Fan Care program.
Fan Care is a summer cooling assistance program administered by local Area Agencies on Aging. Now in its fifth year, the program began as a pilot in 1991 in central and eastern Virginia with funding provided by Virginia Power. It was expanded statewide in 1992.
In a first for the program, Wal-Mart is serving as the sole retailer providing fans to local Area Agencies on Aging at a discounted rate as a Fan Care Partner. Wal-Mart stores throughout the state will supply the fans and, in some cases, will warehouse and deliver them.
The program is sponsored by the Virginia Department for the Aging in partnership with Virginia Power as its primary sponsor. Appalachian Power Co. and the Association of Electric Cooperatives sponsor the program in their service areas.
Interested people, or their representatives, may call SEVAMP at 461-9481. SEVAMP will screen applicants, buy fans and arrange for their distribution. The program continues until Sept. 30 or as long as funds last.
Anyone can make a tax-deductible contribution to Fan Care by mailing a check in any amount to Southeastern Virginia Areawide Model Program Inc., 7 Koger Executive Center, Suite 100, Norfolk, VA 23502-9481. Checks should be made payable to the agency.
Organizations wishing to become Fan Care Partners should contact the Virginia Department for the Aging, 1-800-552-3402. by CNB
