Retired Fire Captain Harry Edward Wilson, 83, died Monday, June 26, 1995, at Virginia Beach General Hospital.
He was a native of Elizabeth City County and resided in Newport News most of his life.
Prior to World War II, he served in the U.S. Merchant Marine. He retired from the Newport News Fire Department in 1974 after 34 years of service. Capt. Wilson was a member of Ivy Memorial Baptist Church and its Fellowship Class. He was a past member of the local SPCA Board of Directors and served as a Red Cross volunteer for many years. He was a member of Bremond Masonic Lodge (NU)241 AF & AM, William J. McMahon Lodge (NU)303, AF & AM, and Tall Cedars of Lebanon.
Harry Wilson was also the namesake for Uncle Harry's Cones & Cream, a Virginia Beach company founded by his nephew, Harry E. Tully. The company logo bears his likeness.
Capt. Wilson was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lillian Tully Wilson and his brother, Milton Wilson. He is survived by his sister, Edna McCann of Hampton; his brother, Frank Wilson of Newport News; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Harry and Terrie Tully, with whom he resided in Virginia Beach.
A Masonic memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in Peninsula Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service until 8:30 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Peninsula Funeral Home by the Rev. John F. Turrittin and the Rev. Clarence W. Hilling. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park with full Fire Department honors.
