The temporary 40-mph speed limit around the former Route 44 toll plaza was increased Friday to 50 mph.
The speed limit had been reduced to 40 mph since the tolls came off the road June 1. The reduced speed limit was created to protect workers dismantling the plaza and leveling the road.
Traffic engineers performed a speed study Thursday and determined that it was safe to raise the speed limit to 50 mph in the work zone. The new speed limit is still 5 mph below the limit on the rest of the highway.
Work on the road is expected to be complete by November. In the meantime, state police will continue to monitor speeds in the work zone.
Traffic is soon expected to be re-routed to the road's outside lanes as construction crews begin leveling the center of the road. by CNB
