C. FRED BATEMAN SCHOLARSHIP MAY END AS FUND POOL DWINDLES

Eight years and $40,000 after the first C. Fred Bateman Scholarship was awarded to a Chesapeake high school senior, the 40th scholar may be the last.

The scholarships, funded mainly with proceeds from two books written by retiring superintendent Bateman, may end this year as the income from the publications dwindles.

``It's been a nice investment,'' said Bateman, who has personally notified each of the winners annually. ``We'd like to continue it if we could.''

The principals of Chesapeake's five public high schools each have selected a scholarship winner each year since 1987 on the basis of need and academic performance. In recent years, contributions from the Great Bridge Woman's Club and the Chesapeake Association of Public School Administrators have helped make the $1,000 checks possible, Bateman said.

The popular superintendent said he is considering writing a third book, which might enable him to continue the program. Bateman said he has enjoyed previous winners' letters with details of their academic careers.

``That's been the nice part of it,'' Bateman said. ``Feeling that we've helped in some way.''

This year's Bateman Scholarship winners are:

Alexandra ``Annie'' Ashley from Deep Creek High School. Ashley is class valedictorian; served as InterClub Council president and student council and honor society vice president; and played varsity soccer. She will attend the College of William and Mary.

Cynthia Ann Hanawalt of Great Bridge High School. Hanawalt is class salutatorian, participated in varsity track and cross country, and was a member of the National Honor Society and Chesapeake Student Leaders Forum. She will attend Duke University.

Jeannine Simpson of Indian River High School. Simpson, who is salutatorian in her class, was president of the Foreign Language Club, treasurer of the Student Council Association and captain of the varsity volleyball team. She will attend the College of William and Mary.

Vernesha Brown of Oscar F. Smith High School. Brown is an honor roll student and a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, the Teen Club and the Drama Club and is active in her church. She will attend Norfolk State University.

Bhavani Rae Reynolds of Western Branch High School. Reynolds was a peer counselor and member of the drama club. She will attend Mary Baldwin College. by CNB
