Lonnie Daniel Bess Sr., 72, of the 3300 block of Pruden Blvd., a retired painter, died July 1, 1995, in Obici Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Bess was a native of Northampton County, N.C. He retired in 1983 from Ford Motor Co., Norfolk assembly plant, after 38 years; was a member of Liberty Baptist Church, Suffolk; an Army veteran of World War II; and the widower of Margaret Bristow Bess.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda B. Whitley of Windsor, Va.; two sons, Lonnie D. Bess Jr. of Suffolk and Joseph Randolph Bess of Tallahassee, Fla.; a sister, Lessie B. Sawyer of Chesapeake; three brothers, Earl Bess of Newsoms and Vernon Bess and Russell Bess, both of Ahoskie, N.C.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Sallie Britt Bess and Benjamin Bess.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Liberty Baptist Church by the Rev. T.A. Powell. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home from 5 to 6 p.m. today and suggests that memorial contributions be made to Liberty Baptist Church Building Fund, 2601 Godwin Blvd., Suffolk, Va. 23434.
