Police officers said they saved a woman's life Saturday, knocking her knife-wielding husband off her after he stabbed her several times. When the man then turned the knife on the officers.
They opened fire, killing him.
The dead man was identified as Derrick Henderson of Murfreesboro, N.C. His age was not immediately known.
Police said Henderson and his wife - whose name was not released - had been visiting relatives in Portsmouth when the incident occurred about 11:15 a.m. in the 1000 block of County St. in Ida Barbour.
Det. Jimmy Ennis said police received a call of a domestic dispute, and when officers arrived, they found a man on top of a woman, swinging a knife at her head.
The officers interceded and were able to knock the man off the woman, ``at which time he picked the knife back up and began to advance toward the officers,'' Ennis said.
Officers, weapons drawn, shouted at the man to surrender.
``The officers repeatedly tried to get him to drop his weapon,'' Ennis said. Instead, ``he continued to advance'' and began attacking the officers. ``The officers had to fire.''
Henderson suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife was taken to Portsmouth General Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition with multiple stab wounds to her head and body.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid leave - a routine procedure after such an incident - pending completion of an internal police investigation. The case is also being investigated by the commonwealth's attorney's office.
