Martha Ann Hoover Cooley, 71, died July 1, 1995, of a brain tumor after an illness of 15 months in San Diego.
Born in Hammond, La., on Nov. 5, 1924, she attended New Orleans public schools and graduated from the Charity Hospital School of Nursing with the RN diploma in 1947. After graduation she moved to Los Angeles and joined the nursing staff at Los Angeles County General Hospital. In 1949, in Santa Monica, she was married to Norman V. Cooley, M.D., who survives her.
Throughout her life, Martha exhibited an active interest in the support of music, serving on many committees and boards of directors of symphony orchestras and being instrumental in fund development for the La Jolla Civic/University Orchestra, the National Symphony in Washington, D.C., and the Ventura County Symphony. In 1974, she was awarded the B.S. degree from the University of San Diego, and later studied design at UCLA and UC Santa Barbara.
A loyal Navy wife, Martha made a home for her family on both coasts of the United States, in Japan and in Italy, in accordance with her husband's military orders, establishing some 22 separate households over a period of 39 years. From 1981 to 1983 Martha Cooley lived in military quarters in Portsmouth where her husband commanded the Naval Hospital.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her mother, Irene Smallwood Hoover of New Orleans; four children, Camille Cooley King (Scottow A.) of Los Angeles, Candace Vale Cooley-Dettmer (Thiess) of Berlin, Noel Vale Cooley of San Francisco and Norman Vale Cooley III of London; three granddaughters; a sister, Harriet Hoover Doggette of Belle Chasse, La.; and two brothers, James Perry Hoover of Ponchatoula, La., and Sgt. Major Hunter Smallwood Hoover of Columbus, Ga.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at McLeod Mortuary, Escondido. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. in Martha's parish church, St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, Poway.
