CELEBRATING JULY 4TH AT MOUNT TRASHMORE

Thousands took up the city's offer to celebrate Independence Day at Mount Trashmore Park on Tuesday. The festivities, co-sponsored by the city's Parks and Recreation Department and Eagle 97 radio station, got under way at 3 p.m., followed by live musical entertainment on stage at 6 p.m. Things went smoothly until rain began falling shortly after 8 p.m. It prompted organizers to move up the planned fireworks show from 9:30 p.m. to shortly before 9. Traffic was tied up for several hours. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photos by L. Todd Spencer

Some people took the 4th of July easy. A woman sits under one of the

many trees by the lake at Mount Trashmore before the crowds grew for

the fireworks that night.

from Puerto Rico who came to visit him here for July 4th.
