Pier fishing improved a little along the northern beaches on Thursday.
Kitty Hawk Pier reported a few spot, croaker, mullet and small blues taken. Some keeper speckled trout were landed on double bucktail rigs, and grubs. On Avalon Pier, king mackerel weighing 14 and 48 pounds were caught on live bait. Fair numbers of small bottom fish and blues also were taken.
Lots of small blues were landed by fishermen on Nags Head Pier during the morning. Later in the day a few blues, speckle trout and a 26 1/2-pound cobia were taken. Several large jacks were released.
Anglers on Jennette's Pier caught scattered mullet, croaker, spot and a few speckle trout. On Outer Banks Pier a few blues, mullet, pigfish and one keeper flounder were landed.
In the surf, some small bottom fish were caught along the northern beaches. Surfcasters in the Rodanthe-Salvo-Avon area caught lots of spot and a few croaker.
Some nice-sized Spanish mackerel were landed Wednesday at Cape Point during the late afternoon, but on Thurdsday fishing was slow. Fishermen caught some gray trout, mullet and lots of spot along the beach in the Frisco area.
Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was slow, with a few blues and Spanish mackerel taken. Headboats in the area caught a few flounder.
Off Oregon Inlet, dolphin fishing improved with some fairly good catches reported. Several billfish were released. Yellowfin tuna fishing was slow overall.
A few king and Spanish mackerel were taken by anglers trolling around Hatteras Inlet. Well offshore, dolphin, wahoo and several tuna were landed by the Hatteras blue water fleet.
A predicted change in the wind direction, if it materializes, should improve pier action along the northern beaches today.
