USAir will stop jet service to Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport on Sept. 6, to help cut $500 million in yearly costs. The $1.9 million in incentives given to newcomer ValuJet Airlines was also a factor in its decision, the Arlington-based airline said. Piedmont Airlines, operating as USAir Express, will handle USAir's Newport News operations. An official at Norfolk International Airport said USAir's restructuring will cause no change in service there. The 38 full-time and part-time USAir employees in Newport News may apply for positions with Piedmont but would lose seniority and other benefits because that airline operates on a different scale. Some employees could transfer to other cities. (Staff) by CNB
