The earth shook Friday afternoon in northwestern North Carolina and northeastern Tennessee from an apparent aftershock of a minor earthquake earlier this week.
The tremor, with a preliminary magnitude of 3.0, occurred at 5:01 p.m., according to scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo. There were no reports of damage of injuries.
The tremor, centered 20 miles east-northeast of Boone, also was felt in Jefferson, West Jefferson and Zionsville, as well as in Mountain City, Tenn.
Marvin Carlson, a geophysicist at the center, said Friday's earthquake looks to be an aftershock from Wednesday's tremor, which registered a 3.7 magnitude.
``It's just large enough to be felt,'' Carlson said. ``It can make a few things roll off the shelf.''
The epicenter of Wednesday's earthquake was located about 20 miles east of Athens, Ga. by CNB
