Lectures and artwork will explore external and internal perceptions of time during the exhibit, ``Milliseconds to Millenia: The Art of Time,'' which opens Thursday at the Arts Center of the Portsmouth Museums.
The exhibit - organized by the Handworkshop, Virginia Center for the Craft Arts in Richmond - grew out of curator Carol Barton's personal fascination with the theme.
``Most of us are intrigued by time - it is part of our lives which is rigidly measured yet uniquely experienced,'' Barton wrote about the exhibit. ``Time is external, based on the motions of circulatory heavenly bodies and physical cycles; and internal, a personal sensation of passage and change.
``In the end, time is mysterious, and mystery feeds the imagination,'' she wrote.
Works in the show include artists' reflections on time with photography, collage, mixed media, painting, printmaking and artist-made books. Many address the question of how to measure time, Barton wrote.
The exhibit previously has been displayed at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and the Monteserrat College in Beverly, Mass.
The July 13 opening reception for the Portsmouth exhibition will be preceded by a lecture, ``Time, Space and Patience,'' presented by Jim Dixon, manager of the Study Group Department of the Association of Research and En-ligh-ten-ment.
Laura Letchworth will play the harp at the reception to be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the center's 1846 Courthouse Gallery at Court and High streets. The reception is $3 for nonmembers.
On Aug. 1, Lynne Sparrow, a licensed hypnotherapist, will present a noon lecture, demonstrating how people personally organize time in their heads. Persons attending may bring a bag lunch and the museum will provide refreshments.
Both lectures are free. Admission to the exhibit is $1, which includes admission to the entire two floors of the Arts Center.
The exhibit will be displayed through Aug. 27.
The ``Planes, Trains and Automobiles'' exhibit, which began June 23 will continue through Aug. 6. That exhibit includes collaborative works by local artists - Paul Norman, Karen Breeden and Andrew Harmantas.
Viewing hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday.
