GEORGE B. WHITFIELD

George Ben Whitfield, 86, of the 3500 block of Battlefield Blvd. South, died Monday, July 10, 1995, in Chesapeake General Hospital.

Mr. Whitfield was born in Bethel, N.C., and was the son of the late Jesse W. and Sally Hathaway Whitfield. He was the retired owner and operator of Whitfield's Garage for 28 years and was also the president of Mutual Fire Insurance Company for 12 years. He was a member of Good Hope United Methodist Church, Chesapeake, former chairman of the Chesapeake Welfare Board and was a charter member of the Hickory Ruritan Club.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie Lamb Whitfield; his daughter and son-in-law, Elsie and Lonnie Craig; his son and daughter-in-law, L.W. and Jeanette Whitfield, all of Chesapeake; two sisters, Pearl Bland of Harrisonburg, Va., and Florence Henry, also of Chesapeake; two brothers, Herman Whitfield of Bogalusa, La., and J.W. Whitfield of Norfolk; three grandchildren, Nancy Taylor, Susan Hatcher and Pamela Pilch; three great-grandchildren, Ryan and Lexie Hatcher and Michael Taylor Jr.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge by the Rev. Michael Copeland. The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the services at the funeral home. Interment will be held in Good Hope United Methodist Church. Memorial donations may be made to the Cemetery Fund of Good Hope United Methodist Church, 1633 Bennefit Road, Chesapeake, Va. 23322.
