Some familiar names and some new faces have filed to run in Dare County's Nov. 7 municipal elections.
Qualifying will continue until noon, Aug. 4, for seats on the governing boards of Manteo, Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, and Southern Shores. The elections are nonpartisan, and are decided by a simple plurality.
Manteo
Attracting the most early attention is the race for mayor and three commission seats in Manteo, the county seat. Up for grabs will be the mayor's post, and board of commissioners seats now held by Edward Greene, Bill Daniels and Melvin Jackson. Jackson is the only incumbent so far to have filed qualifying papers
Former Mayor John V. Wilson IV has qualified to run against current Mayor Bill Buell.
Another former mayor of the Roanoke Island community, insurance executive Mollie Fearing, qualified to run for a spot on the town's governing board. Sarah Owens also declared her intent to run for a Manteo board seat.Owens is married to the chairman of the Dare County Board of Commissioners, Robert V. ``Bobby'' Owens Jr., and is the sister of North Carolina State Pro Tempore Marc Basnight.
Also set to run for the commission are Bebe Woody, J. Bowen ``Bo'' Ross Jr. and Terry McDowell.
Nags Head
In Nags Head, incumbent Town Commissioner Wayne Gray was a first-day qualifier. Harry J. Thompson Jr., who was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Renee Cahoon when she ran for and won the mayor's seat, also qualified. Two seats are up for grabs in Nags Head.
Dare County Fire Marshal Doug Remaley also filed for a town commission seat. Remaley is a former fire chief in Nags Head. George Farah III also qualified to run in the commission race.
Kill Devil Hills
Incumbent Mayor Terry Gray will run for another term in Kill Devil Hills. Commissioner William R. ``Bill'' Morris, who was appointed to fill the unexpired term of the late Lacy McNeill, qualified to run for his first full term on the board.
The seat currently held by Lurana Cowan is also up for grabs. Cowan, who was appointed to fill Gray's unexpired term when he became mayor, has yet to qualify.
Kitty Hawk
In Kitty Hawk, incumbents Clifton Perry and Carl Parrott have declared their intent to seek re-election. Two seats are open to challenge on the town council.
Southern Shores
Three seats are open on the Southern Shores Town Council. Mayor Kern Pitts is the only incumbent to qualify thus far. Gerald Beshens, who was appointed to fill the unexpired term of the late Wayne Gersen, will run for a council seat. Dick Wood, who was appointed after Councilwoman Myra Ledyard moved away from the town, also filed qualifying papers.
In Kitty Hawk and Southern Shores, the mayor is appointed by the council. by CNB
