PIER FISHING, SURF CASTING, TROLLING ARE NOTHING TO WRITE HOME ABOUT

Pier fishing along the northern beach area was slow Tuesday.

Kitty Hawk Pier reported an unproductive day. Some bluefish, small flounder and a couple of 18-pound king mackerel were taken on Avalon Pier during the morning. Three small cobia were released. Some nice speckled trout were landed during the afternoon on bucktail rigs.

Anglers on Nags Head Pier caught a few blues and Spanish mackerel on jiggers, and caught cobia weighing 16 and 27.5 pounds and a 24-pound king mackerel on live bait. A jack was released.

Jennette's Pier reported a handful of bluefish and pompano taken. Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier caught a few spot, pigfish, sand perch and speckled trout. A 25-pound jack was released.

South of Oregon Inlet, anglers on Rodanthe Pier caught some spot, croaker and three king mackerel weighing between 30 and 57.75 pounds. The 57.75-pounder, a pier record, was landed by Loretta Felker.

A few bluefish, spot, croaker and flounder were taken on Avon Pier. Frisco Pier reported some small bottom fish and a few nice flounder landed Tuesday.

Some small bottom fish and a few blues were taken in the surf along the northern beaches on Tuesday. Around Oregon Inlet, plenty of small flounder were landed. Sheepshead fishing was fairly good around the foundation of the Oregon Inlet bridge.

Scattered bottom fish were taken along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton on Tuesday. A few puppy drum were taken at Cape Point Monday night, and some Spanish mackerel during the day Tuesday. Small bottom fish were landed by surfcasters from Cape Point to Hatteras Inlet.

Inshore trolling for Spanish mackerel and bluefish around Oregon Inlet was slow. A few king mackerel were taken on 3.5 Drone Spoons. The headboat Miss Oregon Inlet reported good catches of triggerfish, sea bass and pigfish. The Crystal Dawn caught lots of small trout and some croaker.

Blue water fishing off Oregon Inlet was scrappy Tuesday. Some tuna and a few dolphin were taken in 50 to 100 fathoms of water well northeast of the inlet. Billfish were scarce. Fair numbers of dolphin and a few tuna were taken southeast of the inlet.

Off Hatteras Island, a good mixture of bailer and gaffer dolphin was taken from behind the wrecks. Quite a few marlin were seen, but only one white marlin was fought and released.

King mackerel and cobia fishing should remain good, providing winds stay light and the water stays clear.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 77.5 degrees Tuesday. by CNB
