FRANK G. LAW

Capt. Frank Gordon Law, U.S.N., Ret., 81, of Virginia Beach, died July 16, 1995, in Sentara Leigh Hospital.

Capt. Law was the widower of Rosa J. Law, and a native of Portland, Ore. He grew up in Washington, D.C., where he attended Eastern High School. He was a 1936 graduate of The Naval Academy, and reported to The Naval Postgraduate School at Annapolis, Md., and as part of his post-graduate work he also attended The Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His subsequent years of sea duty included an unrestricted line officer for tours aboard the cruisers USS Trenton and USS Savannah. He was also assigned to the USS Williamson in 1939. Following Pearl Harbor, he saw action in World War II in the Aleutians area. In 1958 Capt. Law was assigned to the Staff of the Commander, Crusier-Destroyer, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, based in Norfolk, following which he returned to Washington for duty on the staff of the Chief of Naval Material, helping to establish that command and set up its organization. After retiring from the Navy in 1966 he became secretary-treasurer of The American Society of Naval Engineers, and later became Secretary-Treasurer Emeritus. He was also the first recipient of the Frank G. Law Award For 1980 which was established in his honor for his exemplary service to the ASNE. He was a member of Va. Beach United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Fran Reese and her husband, Bates Reese of Irvine, Calif., Grace Freeman and her husband, Dave Freeman of Arlington, Va., Katherine Law, M.D. and her husband Mark Holbrook of Virginia Beach; a sister, Alice Miller of Jekyll Island, Ga.; two brothers, Dr. Charles Law of Alexandria, Va. and Dr. Arthur Law of Vass, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Mimi Halsey, Linda Roben, Patricia Reese, Bates Reese III, Karen Baader, John Reese, Cathy Reese, Kaitlin Holbrook and Christopher Holbrook; and two great-grandchildren, Rachael and Zachary Roben.

A church service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, 1995 in Virginia Beach United Methodist Church by Dr. Paul B. Bailey and The Rev. Clark Mandigo. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. in H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to The American Cancer Society and The Ameican Heart Association. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road, is handling arrangements.
