A COZY COTTAGE at 205 23rd St., just a block and a half from the Oceanfront, has been home to Tautog's since June. Chef Scott Ferguson cooks nightly. Ferguson is a former sous chef at Wesley's, in Greenwich, Conn., and, formerly, in Virginia Beach.
``We specialize in the freshest local fish,'' he says.
A garden mood is created by a green striped awning and green-and-white patio furniture on the double deck facing the street; inside, a handsome wooden bar blends with the wood trim around the doors.
Tautog's is open for dinner from 5:30 to 11 p.m. daily. Call 422-0081. There's a parking lot in back. EDIBLE ART
``Eat Your Pear Out'' is the name of Irma Zanecchia's high-fired stoneware contribution to the Norfolk d'Art Center's new show, opening from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. The event will include a silent auction and tantalizing creations from regional visual and culinary artists.
Dubbed ``Eat Your Art Out,'' the show serves up a food motif on the walls as well as on the tables. The menu includes ceramic sandwiches by Leonette Adler and works by Lynn Sward, Vicki Bruner and David Morris, among others.
Honorary chair for the edible opening is Sydney Meers, chef-owner of the Dumbwaiter, whose downtown Norfolk restaurant features work by local artists along with his eclectic new Southern cuisine. For the show, Meers is preparing an original painting and a chocolate surprise.
Among other local chefs designing dishes are Amy Brandt of the Lucky Star in Virginia Beach, John Fontaine of La Galleria in downtown Norfolk. For more information, call 625-4211 or visit the exhibit at 125 College Place, through Aug. 20. SUSHI SERVICE
Less than a year after he converted his popular Kyushu Japanese restaurant from full service to takeout only, chef-owner Mitsunori Ebigasako has reopened with a sushi bar and kitchen, six tables and dine-in service.
Kyushu is open for lunch on weekdays and dinner nightly; takeout is still available. Kyushu is at 400 Newtown Road in Virginia Beach; call 490-1177. BIG MOVE
Amarin Reelachart, who brought a Thai touch and European training to the new American menu at the Big Tomato (now Three East), plans to open Eurasia at Loehmann's Plaza in Virginia Beach before summer's end. REGIONAL FARE
Can an East Coast restaurant writer survive a fortnight without fusion food?
Yes, I discovered during two weeks in Houghton, Mich., where I sampled local specialties reflecting the region's resources and the diverse population that once mined copper in the Upper Peninsula: sweet grilled trout from Lake Superior, the same fish lightly smoked, custardy Finnish pancakes, Cornish pasties with brown gravy, sausages and hot dogs in natural casings, buffalo burgers, pickled eggs and fragrant Lebanese breakfasts. by CNB
