SUGAR PLUM TO BENEFIT FROM PARTY IN PARADISE

PARADISE is a tropical isle. At least according to Jimmy Buffett songs and the Sugar Plum Bakery.

The Virginia Beach bakery, which trains, educates and employs disabled persons in addition to providing Hampton Roads residents with delicious treats, is holding a Party in Paradise fund raiser at the Virginia Beach Center for the Arts at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Tropical decor and and a buffet of island flavors create the theme while the island-influenced band, Fighting Gravity, provides music. A silent auction featuring tropical vacations and a mechanical surf board are among the activities.

Tickets cost $50 per person. Call 422-9808 or stop by the bakery at 1353 Laskin Road. FREEZING BLUEBERRIES

A few weeks ago, we published an article on blueberries that included instructions for freezing the berries. The story, by Karla Cook of Knight-Ridder News Service, was technically correct in recommending you wash berries before freezing but that suggestion is contrary to advice given by local farmers.

Juanita Burns of Pungo Blueberries Etc. says berries grown by Virginia Beach farmers don't have to be washed before freezing.

``None of the farmers I know around here uses sprays on their berries,'' Burns says. ``And if you wash the berries before you freeze them, it makes the skins tough.''

Besides, you normally wash berries after you remove them from the freezer, she says.

Of course, if you buy them where you can't talk to the farmer, washing would probably be prudent. by CNB
