Shipments of coal through the port of Hampton Roads so far this year have soared 17.7 percent ahead of last year, according to the Hampton Roads Maritime Association. Most of the growth was driven by exports compared to domestic shipments. The port's three coal terminals loaded nearly 25.6 million tons of coal onto waiting colliers, up from 21.7 million tons in the first half of last year. Newport News' two terminals showed the most growth with the small Pier IX Terminal Co. up 81.3 percent to 3 million tons this year. After lagging behind earlier this year, the region's largest terminal, Norfolk Southern Corp.'s Pier 6 at Lamberts Point in Norfolk, is up 2.8 percent to 14.5 million tons loaded. by CNB
