Newport News Shipbuilding said Wednesday it had won a contract worth up to $24 million to overhaul the Navy destroyer Deyo. It is the second destroyer overhaul contract the giant Peninsula shipyard has won since it re-entered the business of repairing Navy non-nuclear ships. Norfolk-based Norshipco also bid on the contract. Built in 1980, the Deyo recently moved to Norfolk from its old homeport of Charleston, S.C. The shipyard will install a vertical missile launch system and upgrade other systems aboard the Deyo. Work on the 8,040-ton warship will begin Sept. 1 and continue until November 1996. by CNB
