With the district qualifiers complete, the prime tournaments leading to the Little League and Pony World Series begin this week in earnest.
Indian River will host the Mustang North Section tournament, which begins tonight at 6 p.m. and continues throughout the weekend, while Bronco, Pony, Colt and Palomino divisions wrap up their respective tournaments on Friday.
Little League state tournaments commence Saturday, represented by five Beach teams, a District 6 team and a Big League softball team composed of players from Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and the Eastern Shore.
Here's a look at what's in store for area teams:
Major boys: Plaza National will meet District 15 Saturday. The time of the game has yet to be determined.
Senior boys: Plaza is playing in the sectional tournament in Portsmouth. The winner will participate in the state sectional, also at Portsmouth.
Big League boys: District 6, the winner of the sectional held last weekend at Plaza, will travel to Harrisonburg for the state tournament.
Major softball: Green Run begins play Saturday in the sectional tournament in Hampton. The winner will travel to Richmond for the state tournament.
Senior softball: Green Run will visit Matthews County this weekend for the state tournament. The winner will travel to North Carolina for the divisional tournament.
Big League softball: District 8, winner of last weekend's sectional tournament in Tappahanock, Va., will travel to Central Springfield this weekend for the state tournament.
Mustang: The North Section tournament begins tonight at Fleet Park at 6 and 8:30 p.m.
Bronco: Games continue at 6 and 8:30 p.m. at South Norfolk.
Pony: The North Section tournament continues tonight at 6 and 8:15 p.m. at Lynnhaven.
Colt: The North Section tournament continues tonight at 6 and 8:30 p.m. at Bennett's Creek.
Palomino: The North Section tournament continues tonight at 6 and 8:30 p.m. at Churchland. by CNB
