Having watched Salem destroy its summer opponents with an explosive outside game, Tallwood brought its own wrecking crew to Wednesday's Rising Stars' girls basketball league championship at Princess Anne.
The Sun Devils couldn't adjust as the Lions forced them inside with a 2-1-2 zone defense that brought Tallwood a 37-31 come-from-behind victory.
``They had a lot of nice outside shooters,'' said Lion center Katrina Hensley, who finished with nine points. ``With our defense, they couldn't hit the 3s. We made them do what they're not comfortable doing - working it inside.''
Salem's Misty Colebank, who was named the Sand Division's Most Valuable Player for the second straight season, scored with 8:56 left in the game to give the Sun Devils a 29-23 lead. Tallwood then put the game away with a 12-0 run.
Hensley capped the run with a three-point play. April Green, who had a game-high 13 points for Tallwood, grabbed a rebound and dished off to Hensley to set up the play.
The Sun Devils, who shot 22 percent in the second half, fell victim to a series of turnovers.
With 3:03 remaining, the Lions spread the court, forcing Salem to foul. However, the Sun Devils managed only one basket before time expired.
