Eastern Amateur officials are hoping the city will recognize the 40th anniversary of the golf tournament next year on its city automobile decals.
This year, the decals honor the Cock Island sailboat race.
Yale Dolsey, the co-chairman of the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament player selection committee, told Portsmouth Sports Club members at their July meeting that 87 of the 320 players on rosters of NBA teams are former PIT participants.
``It pleases me that coaches and agents are finally learning that playing in the PIT can only help their players,'' said Dolsey.
``We had 12 players this year who were Players of the Year in their conferences and only one - Frankie King of Western Carolina - was drafted.
``We had a dozen drafted, so I think it proves that the PIT is known for bringing out the small-college unknown.''
Western Branch's Meredith Turnage was honored by the Sports Club as its female Spring athlete of the year.
Turnage, who will attend North Carolina State in the fall, set records in winning the Southeastern District girls outdoor track titles in the 1,600 meters and the 3,200 meters.
She had third- and fourth-place finishes in the regional and was sixth in the State meet. Twice she has been selected as top female athlete at Western Branch.
The entries for the Baker Damron Junior Tennis Tournament close on Friday. The tourney is scheduled at Elizabeth Manor Aug. 2-5.
Formerly known as the Central Fidelity Junior Tournament, the Baker Damron meet is one of the state's premier junior tournaments.
Players desiring to compete can call 488-4591.
High school athletes can get physicals on Wednesday at 8 a.m. at Wilson High School for only $3.
Physicals given on Wednesday, Aug. 2, at Hunt-Mapp Middle School will be $5.
If a special appointment has to be made, the cost will be $10.
The Eastern Amateur plans to honor longtime contributors by giving a $1,000 college scholarship in their names to a deserving high school senior every year.
The first award given last week was in memory of Tom Strange, the first Eastern winner and a former pro at Elizabeth Manor.
Some of the names of individuals to be recognized in the future have to include such folks as the late George Skinner, one of the tournament founders; longtime chairman Dick Wood; present chairman Dave Whitener; director Galen Hill; longtime rules committee worker Buddy Taylor; and such former players as Deane Beman and the late First Flight champion Dan Ward.
Those interested in a close-up meeting with the Norfolk Tides can attend the annual Awards Banquet of the Tidewatchers Booster Club on Sunday, Aug. 20, at Harbor Park's restaurant.
