Vernon Sawyer ``Verne'/ V' Sawyer'' Taplin II, 34, of the 1600 block of Oleander Ave., a dancer/artist for Fred Astaire Dance Studio in New York City, died July 22, 1995, in his residence.
Mr. Taplin was born in Norfolk. He attended Westwood Hills Baptist Church, Virginia Beach. He was also a choreographer with P.A.A.W. also in N.Y.C. Mr. Taplin was a 1979 graduate of Norfolk Christian School in Norfolk. He was active in the Arts, AIDS and Awareness Coalition in both New York City and Tidewater. He had served as a missionary in the Dominican Republic. He was also a board member of Taplin Electric Co. Inc. in Chesapeake.
Survivors include his mother and father, Alice Hendricks Taplin and Vernon Sawyer Taplin of Chesapeake; a brother, Bruce Wayne Taplin of Chesapeake; a sister-in-law, Melissa Anne Stevens and niece, Rachel Nicole Taplin, both of Chesapeake; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Westwood Hill Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, by Pastor Jess Jackson and the Rev. Thomas Lee Hendricks II. Friends may join the family at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. today for visitation and at the residence following the funeral service Tuesday. Memorial donations may be made to the Tidewater AIDS Crisis Taskforce.
