Outstanding billfish action off the coasts of Virginia and North Carolina, a potential Virginia record skipjack tuna and a tarpon for a 10-year-old highlighted recent fishing action.
The skipjack weighed 22 pounds, 11 ounces, and was caught by Kitty Falk of Norfolk, fishing on the boat 04. This could be the first state record for the species, since the Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament only recognized the fish this year.
The tarpon was 74 inches long and was released in the Chesapeake Bay off Nassawadox Creek on the Eastern Shore by Adam James of Onancock. He hooked and landed the fish unassisted from the Sundancer.
The Water Witch, a private boat skippered by Jim Sculley of Virginia Beach, scored a rare triple Sunday, releasing three blue marlin.
