Emma W. Hairston, of the 300 block of Plaza Trail Court, died July 21, 1995.
She was a native of Princess Anne County and was the widow of James W. Hairston. She was a retired supervisor with the Virginia Beach School System and was a member of St. Mark A.M.E. Church, where she was on the Stewardess Board, Trustee Board, former president of the Daughters of Saint Mark, and a superintendent of the Richmond District A.M.E. Sunday Schools.
She was also a member of the Virginia Beach Teachers Association, National Teachers Association, leader of the United Order of Tents Evening Light Chapter 48 Past Worthy Matron, Pioneer Temple Daughter of Elks, former Basileus of Alpha Lambda and Gamma Mu Chapter of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa Inc., and the former president of the Daisy Chain Social and Charity Club. She was also the first recipient of the Richard Allen Award of the Saint Mark A.M.E. Church and a recipient of the Sojourner Truth Award.
Survivors include one daughter, Patsy Burke of Virginia Beach; one foster son, Freddie Hairston of Virginia Beach; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins, and other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be conducted at noon Wednesday in St. Mark A.M.E. Church by the Rev. Henry Jefferson. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Ritualistic Services will be today at 5 p.m. by the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa Inc. at Community Funeral Home. The Gamma Mu Chapter service will be at 6 p.m. The Daughters of Elks Visitation with family and friends will be from 7 to 8 p.m. The body will be in the church Wednesday at 10 a.m.
