a 13-day deer hunt within the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge will be held from Oct. 5 through Oct. 28 and on Nov. 3 and 4, Lloyd A. Culp Jr., refuge manager, announced this week.
The either-sex deer hunt, designed to control the burgeoning deer population in the refuge, will be strictly controlled within the 100,000-acre wildlife area that will be open to hunting.
``Last year, 252 deer were harvested, and the largest deer taken was a 160-pound field-dressed buck,'' Culp said.
Applicants for hunting permits must submit a $10 non-refundable fee with their applications. Questions about the hunt requirements should be directed to Teresa Cherry, at the Dismal Swamp Wildlife Refuge office in Suffolk.
