``QUIT MAKING CIGARETTES!''

I was interested in the two-page ad by Philip Morris U.S.A. announcing a program to prevent cigarette sales to minors.

Highlight: ``There are things we can directly control and can do on our own. And we are.''

Yes, there is something Philip Morris can do on its own for all mankind and even the kids: Quit making cigarettes!

Highlight: ``Action against access puts a strong integrated program squarely where our commitment is: Preventing minors from having access to cigarettes.''

Yes, this, too, is something that Philip Morris can do for all mankind and even the kids: Quit making cigarettes!

Do I have any right to feel this way about cigarettes? The answer is yes. I watched a sister die from an inoperable lung cancer because she acquired a habit that she could not control. It is possible that some of the cigarettes she smoked were manufactured by Philip Morris.

Yes, Philip Morris, ``The best way to keep kids away from cigarettes is to keep cigarettes away from kids,'' and the best way to do that: Quit making cigarettes! Change to making a product that is good for mankind.
