Joseph Powell Speight Jr., retired Major United States Air Force, age 71, of 112 Station Bay Drive, Sanderlin, Kitty Hawk, N.C., died Thursday, July 27 in Winslow Memorial Home in Elizabeth City.
He was a native of Rocky Mount, N.C. and retired from the U.S. Air Force. He was a graduate from the Military Academy, Citadel, South Carolina. Major Speight was the son of the late Dr. Joseph Powell Speight and Elizabeth Fox Speight and the husband of Catherine White Speight of the home.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Dr. Lisa W. Speight-McKee and husband, Chad McKee of Greensboro, N.C.; one son, Joseph Powell Speight III and wife Teresa Burgess Speight of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; two sisters, Nell S. Moore of Edenton, N.C. and Elizabeth S. Cherry of Rocky Mount, N.C.; and one grandchild, Brandon Burgess.
Graveside services will be conducted on Saturday, July 29, at 2 p.m. in the Pineview Cemetery in Rocky Mount, N.C. The family will be at the residence in Kitty Hawk, N.C. Twiford's Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, is in charge of arrangements.
