James Allen Rives, 80, of the 5400 block of Argall Ave., died July 25, 1995, in a Norfolk hospital.
Mr. Rives was a native of Norfolk and retired from the U.S. Navy as a commander and was with the 81st Seabees Battalion, involved in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day, and the invasion of Okinawa. He was a member of the firm MMM Design Group, Norfolk for 40 years and retired as Vice President.
He was a member of Ghent United Methodist Church, where his father was one of the founders. He received his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering in 1938 from Virginia Tech; in 1940, he received his M.S. in Sanitary Engineering from Virginia Tech. He was a licensed professional engineer and manager of many diverse engineering projects in the U.S. and abroad. He was a former assistant professor of Civil and Sanitary Engineering at Virginia Tech. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club; the Prosim Society and Golden Hokie Club of Virginia Tech, and was the initial inductee at the Hardy Cross Hall of Fame at Old Dominion University Civil Engineering Department.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine B. Rives of Norfolk; two sons, James A. Rives of Cranston, R.I., and Frank B. Rives of Brandon, Miss.; and three grandchildren, Erin E. Rives, Amy L. Rives, and Burks A. Rives, all of Brandon, Miss.
A funeral will be conducted at noon today, July 28, 1995, by the Rev. Harold E. Thornton in Ghent United Methodist Church. Internment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Ghent United Methodist Church Building Fund. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
