A Chesapeake police officer was seriously injured Thursday night when the cruiser he was driving spun out of control, struck a tree and burst into flames.
The officer, whose name was not released, was being treated at the Burn Trauma Unit at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Police spokesman Tony Torres said the officer was responding to a call for assistance from another officer who was running after a suspect in the Bowers Hill area.
About 7:15 p.m., as the officer drove along South Military Highway near Rotunda Drive, his car went out of control.
``He managed to get out of the car on his own'' as the flames spread, Torres said.
No other vehicles were involved.
