A 23-year-old Chesapeake man was killed Tuesday night on Interstate 64 when he fell asleep and his minivan hit a tree, state police reported.
Witnesses told state police that David Ortiz was driving eastbound when his 1986 Ford Aerostar swerved off the right side of the road near the Indian River Road exit. He was not wearing a seat belt.
A motorist pulled Ortiz from the van before it caught fire, but he died at the scene.
