TIDES TOP TOLEDO IN 10 INNINGS, 9-5 THE MUD HENS HAD RALLIED FOR TWO IN THE BOTTOM OF 9TH TO TIE

The Norfolk Tides scored four runs in the 10th inning to defeat the Toledo Mud Hens, 9-5, Wednesday at Skeldon Stadium.

It was the Tides' fifth straight win and their third consecutive victory over Toledo.

The Tides' big 10th came after Toledo tied the game with a two-run rally in the ninth.

Butch Huskey opened the 10th with a single off Toledo reliever Brian Maxcy. Alex Ochoa walked and Derek Lee doubled, scoring Huskey and Ochoa.

Edwin Alicea then singled, scoring Lee. Alicea scored two batters later when first baseman Tony Clark bobbled Ricky Otero's squeeze bunt.

The Mud Hens had tied the game at five in the ninth inning against Tides reliever Pete Walker. After Rudy Pemberton walked to lead off the inning, pinch hitter Alan Zinter drove a one-out single to right.

With two outs, Jim Givens dropped a lazy pop fly down the left field line for a double, scoring Pemberton and Zinter.

Norfolk reliever Bryan Rogers pitched the bottom of the 10th for the victory, his sixth of the season.

In the top of the 9th inning, the Tides scored what appeared to be an insurance run on Otero's RBI single.

Trailing, 2-0, in the fifth inning, the Tides ripped four runs off Mud Hens starter Clint Sodowsky without an out.

Sodowsky hit leadoff hitter Lee, who moved to third on Alicea's single. Sodowsky then walked John Orton to load the bases and Rey Ordonez to force home Lee.

Otero singled to score Alicea and Jay Payton's double brought home Orton and Ordonez, for a 4-2 lead.

Toledo scored one run each off Norfolk starter Al Osuna in the third and fourth innings. Milt Cuyler's single scored Pemberton in the third and Pemberton's fourth inning-double brought home Joe Hall.

Osuna, in his first start since June 24, gave up six hits over five innings. He was tagged with the loss in Toledo's 8-6 win at Norfolk on July 28.

NOTES: Huskey's double to left in the fourth inning extended his hitting streak to seven games. He's hitting .556 (15-for-27) in the streak. But his streak of home runs in consecutive games ended at three. . . . Reliever Phil Stidham will make his first start for the Tides tonight. He is 2-1 with a 4.45 ERA out of the bullpen this season. by CNB
