The Citadel asked the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday to block Shannon Faulkner from becoming the first female cadet in the 152-year history of the state military college.
The appeal came after the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va., denied a request to stay its order admitting Faulkner if South Carolina did not establish a comparable program for women.
South Carolina is developing a program at private Converse College. But it has yet to be approved by the courts. Faulkner is scheduled to become a cadet Saturday.
The Citadel asked Chief Justice William Rehnquist to block her entrance so the Supreme Court may consideic college is unconstitutional.
Citadel attorney Charles Cooper said there's no way to know when Rehnquist might rule, but ``I think he will realize the sensitivity of reviewing the issue considering the time constraints.''
The college is also appealing the ruling that Faulkner may not be barred from the corps based on her physical condition. by CNB
