WITHHOLDING PROGRAM: Southampton County will participate in the Vehicle Registration Withholding program, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This new program will greatly enhance the collection of overdue vehicle personal property taxes.
Southampton County periodically will send DMV a list of all vehicles with delinquent personal property taxes. DMV then will place an administrative stop on these vehicles, which means residents cannot renew their vehicle registration with DMV until the taxes are paid. Residents must obtain a tax receipt from the Southampton County Treasurer's office and present it to DMV to renew their registration.
A $20 fee is charged to Southampton County for each administrative stop that is placed and then removed. Localities may decide to pass this charge on to affected residents; Southampton County chooses to do so.
The program, which began Feb. 1, is voluntary and available to all 136 cities and counties in Virginia.
Residents with questions about delinquent vehicle personal property taxes may contact the Southampton County Treasurers Office, 1-800-229-3160, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Southampton County is owed $430,000 in delinquent vehicle personal property taxes. The County feels the program is a positive step toward ensuring all Southampton residents pay their fair share.
NANSEMOND POWWOW: The Nansemond Indian Pow Wow, a celebration of the heritage and traditions of the Nansemond Indians, will feature traditional and fancy dancers, Native American survival demonstrations, and traders and crafters from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 19 and 20 at the Lone Star Lakes Lodge in Suffolk.
The grand entry will take place at noon on both Saturday and Sunday with John Black Feathers Jeffries as the master of ceremonies. Featured dancers will be Tony Nelson, a Lakota-Sioux, and Lenora Adkins, who is Chickahominy. The host drum will be Stony Creek and second drum will be Falling Water.
No alcohol will be allowed at the Pow Wow and observers and participants are asked to follow Pow Wow etiquette.
