Three football players from Chesapeake's Great Bridge High School have been diagnosed with viral meningitis, Superintendent W. Randolph Nichols informed the School Board on Monday night. All are recovering.
Outbreaks of viral meningitis, a mild flu-like illness, have been reported throughout the Hampton Roads area in recent months. The disease should not be confused with the much more serious bacterial form of meningitis, which can be deadly.
The illness likely spread among the three students during football practice. Parents of all Great Bridge football players have been notified.
The Chesapeake Health Department will answer questions at 436-8627 or 436-8615.
